Tamang Heritage Trek is a unique trek experience that blends the beautiful natural scenery along with the rich culture and tradition of the Tamang people living in some of the harshest terrains on earth. Tamangs are the predominant inhabitants of the beautiful valley, who are thought to be the descendants of the Tibetans from Kerung who intermingled with the ingenious people of Helambu. The region was previously a restricted region because of its border with the autonomous region of Tibet. Because of this, the route and the surrounding haven’t been exploited and is in its natural wild and pure state.
During the trek, we can be part of the beautiful and unique culture of the Tamang people. Due to the geographical remoteness, despite being so close to the capital city, the lifestyle of the people in the region hasn’t changed much over the centuries. We will be able to see intricately built unique houses made of stone, carved wooden porches and also be part of the ancient festival and tradition. We will also be able to see the true craftsmanship of the Himalayan people reflected in their carved porches, beautiful ornaments, warm and unique clothing and boots. The region was hugely affected by the great earthquake of 2015 but was restored and rehabilitated quickly and was open to visitors within a year of the massive impact. The people here are primarily yak and sheepherders and also grow some hardy grains. Another fascinating aspect of the region is Yak caravan trials and if we are in time for the annual caravan journey we will see massive herds of yaks heading south or towards Tibet for trade purposes. Even in the 21st century, the style of trade exchange with Tibet hasn’t changed at all.
The most optimum time for the Tamang Heritage Trek is in autumn (October and November) and spring (April and May).
