Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is a very challenging and a demanding but an equally gratifying trek in the northwestern region of Nepal. The Dhaulagiri massif stretches 120 km from Kali Gandaki River in east to Bheri in west. The giant massif is bounded by Bheri River and Myagdi River in southeast and southwest region. During the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek, we will be trekking to the foothills of the beautiful mountain range that consists of Dhaulagiri 1,2,3,4, and 5. Dhaulagiri 1 is the 7th highest peak in the world standing tall at the elevation of 8,167. We will trek along the pristine glaciers and cross snowy peaks at high altitude, a trek only suitable for trekkers with good trekking experience in the past and physical health. The Dhaulagiri region itself is characterized by contrast as it consists of some of the wettest, driest and windiest regions of the country.
Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek begins from a drive from Kathmandu to Beni which lies in Myagdi District, Dhaulagiri zone. From Beni, we will start our trek on foot. We will trek through cultivated terraced farms, rhododendron and oak forests and beautiful villages of Chettri and Magar Community. As we trek uphill, we will come across Gurung settlements which are heavily influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. Trekking furthermore, we will reach the Italian Base Camp from where we can have a magnificent view of the Dhaulagiri 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. We will rest a day here for proper acclimatization. From here we will trek to Dhaulagiri Base Camp through Upper Yungini. The trekking trail itself is very diverse as the landscape is ever-changing. We will trek through several picturesque villages to finally reach the Dhaulagiri Base Camp. On our way, we may encounter Yak caravans, snow leopard mountain sheep or even a Yeti! We will then trek down to Marpha, a very popular settlement in the Mustang District which is situated to the north of Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, and Nilgiri Mountains.
We will also be able to witness the very rich culture of the people living in the region, the Gurungs and Thakalis. Since the region shares very close proximity with Tibet, the culture and traditions of the people living in the region is heavily influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. It is very interesting to see how these ethnicities have sustained so well in the very harsh and remote terrain still unaffected by the chaos of the modernity.
